The Anti-Suffrage Movement

Guest: Paula M. Nelson, Professor Emeritus, History, University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

In The Moment … June 9, 2020 Show 834 Hour 2
This year we celebrate the centennial of the 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote. South Dakota considered the issue many times before the matter was added to the United States Constitution. But just as many argued in favor of suffrage, many others argued against. We're joined now by Paula Nelson. She's an emeritus professor of History at the University of Wisconsin--Platteville. She's also the author of multiple books about Great Plains and South Dakota history, and she wrote the chapter called "Defending Separate Spheres: Anti-Suffrage Women in South Dakota Suffrage Campaigns." That featured in the book Equality at the Ballot Box from the South Dakota Historical Society Press.

The VOICE that WON the VOTE

In August of 1920, women's suffrage in America came down to the vote in Tennessee. If the Tennessee legislature approved the 19th amendment it would be ratified, giving all American women the right to vote. The historic moment came down to a single vote and the voter who tipped the scale toward equality did so because of a powerful letter his mother, Febb Burn, had written him urging him to "Vote for suffrage and don't forget to be a good boy." The Voice That Won the Vote is the story of Febb, her son Harry, and the letter than gave all American women a voice.
